Inclusion & Equal Opportunities

  • Culture of aspiration and high expectations for all. A no child left behind approach to ambitious outcomes and intervention with impact as shown by First Generation Scholars and SEND progression data. Particular focus in 2022 on the return from Lockdown and Inclusive approaches to post-pandemic working and learning.
  • The Equality Objectives are a live and active document driven by student involvement and evaluation.
  • Student Council is deliberately inclusive and provides connection and representation to SLT as well as House and Year councils
  • Assemblies and tutor time materials profile inclusive topics to build knowledge and understanding: Autism awareness, LGBTU History Month, Protected Characteristics etc.
  • Student Values Leaders work explicitly on issues relating to matters of inclusion and profile national themes or events (e.: LGBTQ, care for the Carers) as well as driving an anti-bullying agenda across the year.
  • The College has been twice awarded Rainbow Flag Award for inclusive practices.
  • Inclusion within the Curriculum is a priority, students lead an audit for anti-racism and work with staff to promote awareness, unconscious bias training for staff and students is an on-going priority. In PSHEe Year 11 are explicitly taught anti-prejudice.
  • Peer-Mentoring develops inclusive approaches across a range of years and groups of students: boys mentoring, students of colour, 6th Form to Year 7.
  • The College SEND department promotes awareness, builds knowledge and encourages a student first approach to reasonable adjustment , championing of students with SEND.
  • The College Lead for Disadvantaged students (also Leading Closing The Widening Gap For Disadvantaged Students project cross-county) works with students and families to ensure socio-economic status is no barrier to the most aspirational achievements and destinations. The impact of which is seen in College outcomes for high achievement, low rates of exclusion and ambitious destinations.
  • Understanding of the protected characteristics and equality and diversity is promoted through PSHEe lessons with specific foci led through assembly and tutor time content as appropriate. (2021-22: SLT led assemblies on Protected Characteristics and Banter, linked to specific focus on sexism and racism, developed through tutor time lessons and where relevant within the curriculum). Responsive approaches planned with student voice as an important co-creator.
  • Clear and well promoted behaviour management structures and approaches to the thresholds of response for unkind behaviours and bullying, with specific reference to the protected characteristics.
