Batucada Carnival Club have represented the College in some exciting events this term.

Their first event was Crowborough Bonfire and Carnival on the 12th September. For the processions the students took their red dragon and some of the smaller makes from last summer’s War of the Worlds tableau. It was great to see everything lit up parading through the streets of Crowborough. Onlookers were delighted to see the dragon again and Heathfield students were very popular with the children watching.

The team were kindly invited back to Mayfield this year. On a windy evening the students, led by Kitty Hilsdon, managed to hold on to the blue dragon. The village and local community were so pleased to see them and they received many wonderful appreciative comments and deafening cheers from the crowds. The independent judges awarded Heathfield best walking group and they look forward to receiving the award in December.

The final event this year was the High Hurstwood Bonfire Night on Saturday 10th October. This is a smaller event with just one procession but Heathfield students were the stars of the night.

The College is extremely proud of all our students who took part or were involved in making everything and preparing for these events. We are very grateful for the donations made by the organisers of these events which go towards materials and our preparations for our main event in Brighton Festival on May 1st 2026. We are also very appreciative of the staff who run this club and also our wonderful parent volunteers and support staff at the College, without whom the students would not be able to take part in these events

GET INVOLVED: If you want to get involved, Carnival Club is on Wednesdays after school until 4.30pm in Art 4 with Mrs Damazer and Miss Smith.

“I really liked the Crowborough Bonfire. I was on the dragon and it was very fun and if you were on the dragon it’s so cool and if you got the head you can face it to the children and you can scare them.

I think people should join Carnival Club because you get your hands messy and you can paint, you can make stuff for the parades (they are so fun) I think you should try them. It’s very fun if you are free on Wednesdays, you should 100% join.” (Current club member, year 9)
