Photography

Teaching & Learning

We use a range of teaching skills to engage and motivate students. Students are also encouraged to develop books in digital formats as well as physical and this can be of real benefit to lower ability students who can struggle with the presentation. We also use cutting edge contemporary photographers to help students develop and refine their ideas.

Facilities

The department has two specialist Photography rooms equipped with PC’s for each student. We facilitate the course using fuji finepix cameras, for which students need to buy batteries and memory cards. We also have an A3 colour printer which is charged at 10p per A3 sheet.

Enrichment

Each year we run a GCSE trip to collect photographs to support the development of the scheme of work they are studying. Destinations vary, depending on the project. We also try, where possible, to offer specialist workshops with lead practitioners.

Curriculum

Within Photography we offer GCSE, AS and A level courses

9, 10 or 11 course length will vary from 2 to 3 years depending what year group your child is in.  However, by the end of the course, every student will have received the same amount of curriculum time.  Below are all the projects your child will cover over the length of their course.

The overarching theme for the course will be ‘Identity’.  It will consist for 4 main elements;

  • Introduction This will be a general introduction to photography and the use of the Photoshop package
  • Identity of place Students will make a trip to Brighton or Hastings (TBC) to gather photographs that capture the identity of the town they are visiting.  These photographs will form the foundation for exploring and developing their ideas through the Photoshop package, all the while using contextual references and sources to help them learn processes and techniques.
  • Experimenting with Portraiture This part of the course explores the self and how it has been represented by different photographers and artists. They will take photoshoots of themselves and others to refine their photographic skills and will use contextual sources to refine these photographs using 2D and 3D methods and processes.
  • Identity personal response In this last phase of the course, students will select an area which they want to develop into a personal outcome. They will refine their ability to work independently, making decisions about their direction they want their work to take and sourcing contextual references to inspire and inform them towards their final outcome.
