Year 7 enjoy STEM Day

All of year 7 were recently involved in a wider curriculum day, celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.  This was a fun filled, action packed day brought to the College by Wonderstruck.

The day started off with the Wonderstruck Rocket Show, this showcased how rockets work by a number of different exciting and dangerous experiments done on stage to the students.  Large numbers of students said the show was fantastic with many saying how ‘fun it was to watch’, how ‘interesting’ and ‘cool’ the show was.  It was mentioned how ‘interactive and innovative’ the show was, one student went on to say ‘the science show was the best part of the day because it was very entertaining and fun to watch the fire and the explosions!’.

After the science show, the students were taught how to make their own basic rockets that were then fired across the field using compressed air.  Lots of students commented on how fun this was ‘because it was cool to see the rockets fly’.  Some of the rockets were amazing and shot nearly across the whole width of the field!

Their final workshop of the day was building and racing fan powered cars.  The students used their knowledge of technology and engineering to build their cars and scientific method, trialling different wheels and designs to see if they could make the car go faster.  They then raced their cars in their tutor groups to see who had the fastest car, the winners taking their cars to the grand final in the hall to race against all the other tutor groups.

All of year 7 were really engaged and enthusiastic in the day, all saying they really enjoyed the day.  There were a number of really positive comments and great feedback left including  ‘I enjoyed everything, it was the best day ever’, ‘it was perfect’, ‘it was really fun and it was cool to see how rockets work and watching all the loud pops and bangs’ and finally ‘I was very impressed with the show and some the experiments had me in awe!’.

We are very grateful to Wonderstruck for helping us bring the science to life in such an engaging and dramatic way. The students were clearly applying good knowledge learnt in the classroom to adapt and amend their designs which was great for their staff to see. This memories of this applied learning will stay with them for a long time as they now focus on how they can expand their knowledge and understanding even further.
