Strong outcomes on annual Student Voice survey

Alice and Nathan, Wellbeing Lead Team

We are delighted to share the outcomes of the 2024-5 Student Voice survey which shows positive responses this year are again increased in all areas. This is the result of some great work from the students as well as their teaching staff and support team.

The representative survey covers all aspects of school life and is completed by approximately half the school with 4 tutor groups from each year group completing the survey.

Overarchingly over 90% would recommend the school to a friend and that they enjoyed school, one student commented proudly: “This is the most popular secondary school locally and I go to it!”

Academic feedback was strong with 90% or over stating they know teachers help them do their best, provide challenging and enjoyable work. There was a strong belief that the school has high expectations for them and a wide range of subjects for them to study and enjoy.

An overwhelming number of responses were clear they had a trusted adult they could talk to and again 90% or more felt behaviour around the school and in lessons is at least good.  Students’ felt understanding of bullying and action to prevent it was strong (a view echoed by an ESCC external review last term) and 97% stated they felt safe at school.

Perhaps most affirming in our current culture were responses on mental health and well-being. Well over 90% of responses felt the college supports them to look after both their physical and mental health, encourages them to be independent and take on responsibilities. 98% felt the college encourages a culture of mutual respect and equality. Students’ comments included “I feel like I fit in.” and “The College is very supportive and looks after students’ wellbeing as well as educating them.”

Students’ feedback highlighted the college’s unique character, strong enrichment and personal development alongside academic strength.

Safeguarding and well-being lead Ms Surrage said: “It’s really pleasing to hear that the feedback from students about wellbeing at the college is so positive. We’ve worked really hard to collaborate with students on this over the past few years and continue to do so with a view to supporting them as effectively as possible.”

Headteacher, Ms Barlow reflected: “These outcomes are very affirming and it is pleasing to see the outcome of some hard work by students and staff working together. We do not take anything for granted and know we still have more we can do. We are committed to this important work alongside external bodies and parents to secure the resource our young people need.”
