Heathfield Students respond to COP26 and the Climate Change imperative.

The Heathfield Community College “Eco Reps” have been central to the College’s response to the COP26 summit in Glasgow from 1st-12th November.

These student leaders have distilled their knowledge and advice into a series of daily social media posts. These highlight climate-related issues and suggest practical steps so that the College community can “do their bit” as the world attempts to keep global warming below +1.5°C. This advice included tips on recycling, buying seasonal fruit/vegetables, reducing water and meat consumption, using energy efficient products as well as the use of low-carbon transport.

In addition, the College will be working across the next term to renew its commitment to recycling, providing suitable bins and signage across the site to make the choice to recycle easier and more effective.

Furthermore, over the course of the year The College will be devoting portions of the grounds to leave to meadow as part of an effort to enhance bio-diversity making the most of the Colleges location situated between Tottingworth Park (part of the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty) and Heathfield Park as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

A number of these students also took part in Global Social Challenge work over the summer holidays leading sustainability projects in their community and all the Eco Reps will be leading on this work across all year groups in the College through their work with School Council, awareness raising and information sharing.
