2021 GCSE Outcomes at Heathfield Community College

Students collect GCSE results this year in undeniably unprecedented circumstances, not least because their programme of study included three national lockdowns. For the second year running exams were cancelled, final grades were instead based on assessments by teachers following guidance from exam boards.

Year 11 (and Year 10 students also collecting results this year) have consistently shown real determination and ambition to succeed. They can be proud of themselves and their outcomes. We congratulate all our students and celebrate their hard work along with the relentless support of their parents and carers.

Impressive outcomes for students:

Our priority throughout has been to ensure that all our students are able to study, learn and continue to plan for their future with the same ambition and determination of previous cohorts. Through their own hard work, commitment and their exceptional partnership with their teachers, they have secured some outstanding results.

They are now able to enjoy the fruits of that hard work, taking up places on the next step of their educational journey. They have every right to celebrate and feel very proud of themselves at this point. We look forward to seeing many of them in September and celebrating their continued post-16 successes as they progress from such a fabulous launch-pad.

Headteacher Caroline Barlow said, “We are incredibly proud of our students and there is so much to celebrate about what they have achieved. They have shown real character, maturity and self-belief. In Year 11 students outperformed national comparators in all areas. 44 students gained Grade 7 or above in 8 or more subjects, a standard comparator, however due to the breadth of our curriculum many achieved highly across a greater number of subjects. High achievers included 10 Grade 9s with 1 Grade 8 and 1 Grade 7; Bethany Casse and Joseph Goodsell each also achieved 10 Grade 9s and an additional Grade 7.

Other students achieving exceptional outcomes include Freya Flagg, George Gloss, Zack Goldsmith and Marcia Stubbings with 8 Grade 9s and additional Grade 8/7s. Jessica Blackhurst achieved 7 Grade 9s and 4 Grade 8s. Bree Bailey, Catherine Hamilton, Gemma Cullington, Alice Lass, Lauren Fenn, Margaux Collins, Cameron Matthews, Olivia Irwin, Isabelle Gadsby, Thomas Large (Lead Prefect Team) all also achieved highly with 10 GCSEs at Grades 7-9.

A number of students should be celebrated for their achievements through some challenging circumstances over the last 18 months: Bella Carpenter-Roberts, Thomas Daw, Aidan Doran, Violet Spencer, Nico Bennett, Harvey Munro, Emily Day, Aspen Coppard, Charlie Snodin and Harry Mugridge. Students making exceptional progress include Hugh Nicholson, Rasim Ailodzic, Billy Cottingham, Lola Ellis and Elle Morley.

In Year 10 students equally performed exceptionally well in the two GCSEs taken at this stage. 40% of outcomes achieved were Grades 9-7 (compared to 28.9% nationally) and 90% at Grades 9-4.

Head of Year 11, Jodie Adams said “I am so proud and honoured to have worked with this year group over the course of the last year. They have shown such resilience, determination and understanding throughout. They will now be able to go on to their next steps full of confidence and having developed key skills which will support them with their future studies. They have shown what can be achieved through hard work and commitment. They should be extremely proud of themselves, just as their teachers are.”

The journey to this point

No other year group has had quite such disruption and change during the course of their GCSE study. There should be no under-estimation of these achievements.

Students have shown phenomenal resilience and determination throughout their studies, completing 2019-20 (March to July) in a time of national lockdown and adjusting to continued remote working and lockdown throughout the last year. Teachers have been impressed with their commitment to study and their ambition to succeed that shone through this period. They have acquired skills and shown depth that will stand them in good stead for their future studies and life choices.

Throughout the summer term of 2021 College staff worked collectively to agree Teacher Assessed Grades which were submitted to the exam boards in June. A national process has been applied to quality assure centre practice and procedures that was overseen by the exam boards and the exams regulator Ofqual, their message to students and parents can be seen here: Ofqual Message

Students collecting A Level results this year experienced their Sixth Form studies in undeniably unprecedented circumstances, including three national lockdowns. For the second year running, exams were cancelled, final grades were instead based on assessments by teachers following guidance from exam boards.

All staff at Heathfield Community College are exceptionally proud of all of Year 13 and the hard work that they have consistently shown. They can be proud of themselves, their outcomes and their aspirational progression routes. We congratulate all our students and celebrate the hard work that they have shown to get to this point along with the relentless support of their parents and carers. A number of students are successfully progressing onto alternative highly competitive courses or employment including:

  • Other apprenticeships in customer services, accountancy and with a local bike company.
  • 10% of students are also progressing onto Art Foundation courses or other specialist further education.

We also continue to support a number of very talented students into Art Foundation courses at local Colleges which enable them to develop skills and build portfolios for future steps in Creative industries.

In addition to the 2021 cohort, a number of students from 2020, 2019 and 2018 have secured places on courses across the country. This includes Medicine, Zoology, Psychology, History, Biomedical Science and Law. Every year we support students’ progression onto higher education at a time that is right for them.

Director of Sixth Form, Paul Evason said “After another challenging year students should take time to reflect on their outstanding achievements and gaining their onward destinations. Our students always impress us, but the determination and resilience demonstrated by this cohort throughout their studies over the past two years is highly commendable.
