Heathfield Poets impress at national competition

During June, our Year 7–9 students were given the opportunity to take part in a National Writing Competition hosted by Authors Abroad.

They could either complete a short story started by the author Kathryn Evans or complete a poem started by the poet Karl Nova.  We were hugely impressed with all the entries that we received.  The quality of the writing and the amount of imagination used was impressive.

Following submitting our entries we received confirmation that one of our students, Alice Cronin won the Poetry section!  Congratulations to Alice!

Alice is receiving her own signed copy of Karl Nova’s latest book and she has won the school a visit from Karl Nova. Authors Abroad commented:

It was the most hotly contested category, obviously @KarlNova has really helped pupils unlock their inner poets. I struggled to pick from the shortlist and was helped by @SpozPoet. So well done Alice for impressing a professional poet as well as our judges!

Our library is committed to finding new ways of engaging in literature both through reading and writing, and more competitions like this will be coming soon!

The students who took part are: Alice Cronin, Lucy Coombs, Keeva Hodgkinson, Felicity Beebee, Adam Toogood, Max Terry, Callum Baldwin, Jake Geisbert, Suzy Stocker

Here is Alice’s winning poem:

It’s a journey of discovery
you take steps just where they’ll lead
and you have to keep going
without really knowing
what the end is going to be
but it seems to unfold
the further you go
you even feel excitement stirring in your soul
Piece by piece you’re solving the puzzle
even though you began with everything muddled
Your aim is in touching distance
and isn’t out of reach
There so much more knowledge
that even teachers do not teach
That inner strength bubbling up and out
Just think of where you’ll finish
if ever you’re in doubt
I know that problems can lead to stress
but just reach for the end goal
like it’s a destined address
one where you seek refuge
from the raging storm outside
one where your problems can be dissolved effortlessly
and the existing beauty inside of you vividly amplified
A quiet voice inside of you
desperately needing to be heard
sit on the rooftops
eco your voice
like that of a powerful bird
Your that ripple in the sea
that tiny seed on the tree
the only person in the rain
the only one who’s willing to start all over again.
