Media Studies

Introduction

Media Studies is a vibrant and popular department offering a range of A Level, GCSE and vocational qualifications. At KS4 students can study the NCFE Interactive Media course, including animation, video production and radio production. At A level the department offers a stimulating 2 year course, covering all areas of the media, including film, magazines, TV, internet and radio.

Teaching & Learning

The department uses a range of teaching and learning techniques, catering to all students and abilities. Student work incorporates a large amount of practical experience, in creating media products, often with vocational contexts. Methods for submission of work are varied and often at the students’ discretion, but can include films, music videos, magazines, radio programmes, blogs, video commentaries and ibooks, as well as written work.

Facilities

We are a well-resourced department, featuring two Apple Mac suites, all running iMovie and Final Cut for video editing; iStopMotion 3 and Blender for animation, as well as the full Adobe suite for print-based work. We also have a fully equipped radio studio donated by Heart FM and a TV studio with green screen facilities. Radio Heathfield broadcasts five days a week at registration, break or lunch.

Enrichment

A wide variety of enrichment activities are offered, with Heathfield TV and Radio Heathfield as regular features. We have had visits from working practitioners in animation, as well as Skyped interviews to Heart fm. Visits include, Disneyland, Rome and Berlin.
