Science

Introduction

The Science Department consists of 10 full-time and 3 part-time Science teachers, supported by a very professional team of 4 science technicians. We are a real team, all working for the progress and success of all pupils, regardless of ability. All staff teach all areas in KS3 and KS4, and then specialise in KS5 into the three main curriculum areas. There are many opportunities for staff to develop their careers with the aid and support of their colleagues, and many of our team have gone on to become heads of science or science coordinators themselves.

Teaching & Learning

Science is taught throughout the college as a practically-based course, where formative assessment and constant feedback is at the heart of our curriculum. All our courses are written in-house, where we tailor the curriculum to our students, and these evolve as the students and National Curriculum changes. Students enjoy Science at Heathfield, and large numbers choose it in the sixth form. We have broad setting from Year 7 to Year 11, to ensure students are on the right path to maximise their chance of success.

Facilities

We have ten large fully-equipped labs, two of which have banks of PCs. We also have two smaller, fully equipped, areas for practical science, used for smaller sixth form groups and individual project work.

Enrichment

We run sixth form drop-in workshops every week of the year after school in ‘A’ level Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We run a biology field trip every year, and many smaller trips in the sixth from, e.g the lectures at the University of Sussex.

Some students start Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs at tye beginning of  Yr9, while others continue Key Stage 3, delaying the start of GCSE until Feb/March of Yr9. About 25% of students study the triple sciences at GCSE, determined by Yr8 exam results and teacher recommendations, while the rest of the year group study the Double Award Science, according to their abilities and aptitudes. Double Award Science results in two Science GCSEs being awarded.
