History

Introduction

The History department has five specialist History teachers and it has been the department’s policy for departmental staff to teach as wide a range of History as possible, throughout the age and ability range. Staff in the department also teach Government & Politics and Sociology at A Level. Examination results at GCSE and A Level are consistently good and above the national average.

Curriculum Intent

In this subject students build a sound chronology of history through a knowledge rich curriculum that supports students to understand key themes and concepts such as government, religion, conflict and society. Through the curriculum, students will be encouraged to see the patterns that the past creates, analysing how the themes and concepts mean different things at different times. In doing so, students can better explain the world around them today while developing skills that help them to communicate their explanations, arguments and judgements of the past. Students also examine historic evidence critically, using their knowledge to examine evidence for usefulness and in historical enquiry.

History

Facilities

The department has four well-resourced History rooms which are all equipped with interactive whiteboards and wi-fi computer/internet access. Rooms are displayed with student work and historical resources to create a rich and stimulating environment in which to learn.

Enrichment

The department tries to find as many ways as possible of enriching student’s experiences of history, for example entering students into the national Historical Association historical writing competition, running the Lessons from Auschwitz project with Year 12 History students and the annual Year 8 trip to the World War 1 Battlefields. Residential trips have taken place to Berlin and Normandy. In addition to this, Key Stage 4 students are invited to attend History Support, which runs during one lunch time a week to help students complete homework, revise for assessments or catch up on missed work.
